Build Brampton Civic

Cancer care close to home

Osler's cancer care program currently offers a wide range of prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment services. As Osler provides cancer care to one of Ontario’s fastest-growing regions and our community continues to experience higher rates of cancer, we need to build for the future of care, treatment and supportive services.

  • Projections show that within the next 10-15 years, the number of cancer cases in the communities served by Osler is expected to double.
  • By 2028, the need for radiation therapy – a very specialized type of treatment – is projected to increase more than 60% in these communities.

Currently, patients in need of radiation therapy must travel outside of Brampton and Etobicoke to receive treatment. Osler’s plan for a new, state-of-the-art cancer care centre will ensure comprehensive and integrated cancer care services are available where and when the community needs it most.

Osler’s plan for cancer care at Brampton Civic

Osler is working on plans for a new cancer care centre that will house more comprehensive oncology and survivorship services under one roof, including linear accelerator machines that use radiation to destroy or damage cancer cells and keep them from spreading.

Locating a new cancer care centre on Brampton Civic Hospital grounds will place cancer services close to other important hospital services and resources. The proposed location – the south-east corner of the hospital campus – and will minimize disruption to other hospital services during construction.

In addition to expanding capacity for patient care, Osler’s cancer care program will attract more highly-skilled clinicians and specialists and create new medical and health education opportunities, and spark more cancer research opportunities.

Osler is in Stage One of the Ministry of Health’s multi-stage capital planning process and is currently working with clinical teams, consultants and architects to plan the new services and patient care spaces. These preliminary requirements help shape the next stage of planning and design, leading to more detailed architectural plans.
